Who Owns Garden Lodge Now

Kensington and Chelsea is famous for being a much loved living location for celebrities. The likes of Sir Richard Branson, Robbie Williams and Elton John are among stars who have homes in the royal borough.

But one of the most renowned celebrity homes sits on Logan Place, a quiet residential street just off Earl's Court Road in South Kensington. Garden Lodge, surrounded by a towering stone wall, belonged to former Queen front man, Freddie Mercury.

The rock'n'roll legend moved into the unsuspecting West London property in 1985 with his then partner Mary Austin whilst he was still performing with the band. If you could see past the privacy wall surrounding the home you'd see a large Edwardian home with a garden full of trees.

In his early days at Garden Lodge, the home was the location for frequent wild parties and late night recording sessions in the attached recording studio.

In the final weeks of Freddie's life he began to grow increasingly frail and spent less time in the public eye. He finally died in Garden Lodge on November 24, 1991 due to complications with AIDS, leaving the estate to Mary Austin and her sons.

As he was cremated, Freddie Mercury doesn't have a public grave site. Not long after his passing therefore, fans began flocking to Garden Lodge to pay their respects. They plastered the surrounding walls with letters, memorabilia and etched their condolences on the green doors marked "Studio Gate" and "Garden Lodge."

Almost three decades since his passing, Mary Austin and her family still reside in Garden Lodge, however the fan letters that once plastered the home's walls have now been removed.

Fans can still visit the iconic home, once described as "London's biggest rock'n'roll shrine" but the tribute wall surrounding the £20 million home has been cleaned and replaced with signs highlighting CCTV cameras stating, "graffiti is a crime".
